A social media eye-opener at Micro Persuasion on the incidence of social media surfing in the workplace.
As much as the "deniers" claim social media is interesting fluff without a business model or revenue-generating audience, with over 1/2 of business people regularly tapping into social media for personal reasons, perhaps we're reaching a "tipping point" of people who now that they get it will start to learn how to harness it.
Sidebar: Isn't it funny how people's opinion change when they become part of the minority - witness the flock to Global Warming over the last 6 months. At our base instincts, I guess it's much safer to fit into popular opinion than to stand apart. Based on these numbers below and that principle, expect a lot more "chasm jumping" to the social media bandwagon over the next little while.
"According to a new survey by Clearswift, some 43% of employees access Web 2.0 sites multiple times during the work day. Think they're publishing too? Nod. Studies have shown that most blogging takes place during the day.
* 51% spend an hour or more a week on Web 2.0 sites; 13% spend five hours or more
* 46% have discussed work-related issues
* 46% regularly access Wikipedia during work hours
* 50% believe they have a right to use work computers for personal internet access"
